But no, it was a different kind of mogul’s kid.
Not clear there is a story here. The mogul in question is hip-hop singer Sean Diddy Combs, sometimes known as Puff Daddy and P. Diddy. At one time, he performed with a rap group known as “Diddy-Dirty Money” that recorded on a label called “Bad Boy Records.” (The Times did not make an issue of that.)
Anyway, his son got a football scholarship to UCLA, which is what the story is about. Such scholarships are paid out of non-state funds.
I guess the question is: Diddy get special treatment?:

This "controversy" has been ridiculous. He is by all accounts a good student and athlete, as deserving of an athletics scholarship as any other football recruit. Now, whether Sean Combs is comfortable with his son accepting a scholarship, when he could easily pay for tuition, is another story. But still…his son is by no means the first child of a wealthy family to be given and accept an athletic scholarship. Where was the outrage in these other cases? Diddy could do a lot of good by making a donation of equal or greater value to his son's scholarship to the UCLA Fund.
