Public Documents Request on Hotel: We Can Come Right Over!

See prior posts for the Faculty Association’s request for the business plan of the proposed hotel/conference center.

12/4/11

Dear Ms Felker,

Thank you for your response to my request for public records.

Since it might take 8 weeks or more to provide me with the information I requested, and since the chancellor has already mentioned that there is a written study by a consultant, would it be possible for me to stop by Murphy Hall in person and pick up that report? That way I would be able to get some part of the information requested in a more timely manner.

Then, when the rest of the information, including all responsive documents, is ready, you could mail it to me. Or, if you notified me by email that it was ready, I could also stop by and pick it up on campus. That would save the cost of postage.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

Susan Gallick

The Empire Strikes Back (at BruinGO)

Below is an article from the online edition of the Daily Bruin regarding the BruinGO program, a system of subsidized public transit for UCLA students and employees.

Note that the announcement reported by the Bruin is being made at the end of classes and just before exam week when students are not paying attention. There is no paper edition of the Daily Bruin at this time of year.

The UCLA transportation powers-that-be have never been happy with BruinGO, precisely because it displaces the parking empire. Prof. Donald Shoup of Urban Planning has been a leader, both in the creation of the program and sustaining it. Below is the Daily Bruin story. It basically just reports and doesn’t question. Below that is a reference to one of Prof. Shoup’s early pieces on the success of BruinGO.

UNLIMITED BUS ACCESS: AN EVALUATION OF THE UCLA BRUINGO PROGRAM AND ITS LESSONS FOR CALIFORNIA

Donald Shoup, Department of Urban Planning, UCLA

Jeffrey Brown, PhD candidate, Department of Urban Planning, UCLA

Daniel Baldwin Hess, Department of Urban Planning, SUNY-Buffalo

The conclusions section from this chapter includes the following:

The substantial mode shifts caused by BruinGO refute the common assumption that fare-free transit cannot entice commuters from their cars in California. Among UCLA faculty and staff who live in the Blue Bus service area, bus ridership for commuting to campus increased by 134 percent, and solo driving fell by 9 percent. Among students, bus ridership increased by 43 percent, and solo driving fell by 33 percent…

Rising Bus Fares to UCLA: The Whole Story?

The Daily Bruin has a rather benign story today about fares rising for trips to UCLA on the various bus lines that reach it. In a sense, it is the usual tight budget story. See:

http://www.dailybruin.com/articles/2010/8/2/local-buses-raise-price-to-ride/

One issue is the role of UCLA Transportation in providing the subsidized BruinGO! program for students, staff, and faculty. Several years ago, Prof. Donald Shoup did an evaluation of the program at an earlier stage. The picture he painted was less benign:
